Most Saturdays in downtown New Castle follow a familiar rhythm. The Henry County Farmers Market runs from 8 a.m. to noon at the 1400 Plaza, people wander over to grab tomatoes and baked goods, and by lunchtime the block quiets down again. The Arts Park next door goes back to being what it usually is on a summer weekend, which is a shady square with benches.
July 25 is not one of those Saturdays. For six hours in the middle of the day, the market and the park stop being two adjacent things and start being one long downtown block. If you live here, that overlap is the whole point of the weekend, and it rewards a plan.
Why the two events share a footprint this Saturday
The New Castle-Henry County Renaissance Festival is back for its fifth year on Saturday, July 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., staged in the 1400 Plaza and the Henry County Arts Park in downtown New Castle. It's a free event, run by a volunteer board in partnership with the City of New Castle and the Art Association of Henry County, and it takes over the same plaza the farmers market uses every Saturday morning through October.
That is the piece worth knowing. The Henry County Farmers Market runs Saturdays 8 a.m. to noon at the 1400 Plaza, the last Saturday of April through October. On most weekends it stands on its own. On July 25, the market's last two hours overlap with the festival's first two, which means from 10 a.m. to noon you can hand off a bag of sweet corn to your kid, cross a few feet of pavement, and be standing in front of a falconry demo.
The city closes portions of Race, 15th, and Broad streets around the event, so the downtown you drive through on a Tuesday is a different shape on Saturday. Park farther out than you think you need to and walk in.
A morning built for the overlap, not around it
If you treat the day as market-then-festival, you'll miss the fact that the interesting hour is the one where both are open. A workable order for a local who already knows the block:
- Get downtown before 9 a.m. Farmers market vendors are set and the produce is picked over less than it will be by 10:30.
- Do your market run first: baked goods, tomatoes, whatever the flower grower brought. Drop it in the car.
- Come back at 10 a.m. as the festival opens. Roaming characters and opening ceremonies happen first, which is the low-commitment window good for kids and grandparents.
- Stay through the noon block for the higher-production performances. Aerial acrobatics, falconry, and Shakespeare pieces land in the middle of the day.
- Break for lunch off-plaza before circling back for the afternoon puppetry and music.
If you flip that order and start with the festival at 10, you will find yourself trying to shop the market with fifteen minutes to spare and a turkey leg in one hand.
Where to land for lunch when the plaza fills up
The plaza will have food vendors, and part of the fun is eating there. But a lot of locals treat the festival as a reason to walk into a downtown restaurant they already like, especially if the weather turns.
Ink & Ale Brewhouse sits in downtown New Castle and is the closest sit-down brewery option to the plaza, which means it's also the option most likely to fill up on a festival Saturday. If you want a table there without waiting, aim for 11:15 or after 2. Historic Park Restaurant, Ky's American Bistro, and Blue River Taphouse all show up consistently in local rankings and give you a range of styles inside a short walk. Pizza King has the kind of following that makes people who moved away detour on visits home, which tells you what to expect on a weekend crowd day.
That's My Dogg is the fast option if the plan is really just to eat something and get back to the aerial act. And the newly opened Dairy Queen, which began serving on May 4, 2026, gives you a soft-serve exit strategy for the walk back to the car.
The trick with a downtown event this size is not choosing between the festival and the restaurants. It's staggering them so the plaza is your morning and afternoon, and a real table is your break in the middle.
What Sunday looks like when Saturday used you up
Saturday is loud on purpose. Sunday, in most New Castle summer weekends, is where the county does its quiet work.
Summit Lake State Park, about ten minutes east of downtown, is the reliable Sunday reset. Shore fishing, a boat ramp, and picnic areas that don't require reservations. It's the closest thing to a decompression chamber the area offers, and after a day of costumed crowds, that matters.
Henry County Memorial Park is the in-town alternative if you don't feel like driving. The Art Association of Henry County, whose grounds host summer concerts on a nearly three-acre property with an arts park and pavilion, is a shorter loop for anyone who wants a slower version of the weekend's culture without the falconry.

The Henry County Fair ran July 7 through July 17 this year, one of the longest runs in the state at eleven days, so if you already spent that stretch on grandstand nights and 4-H barns, the Renaissance Festival is the palate cleanser rather than the third weekend in a row of the same thing.
A few small things that make the day easier
- Wear real shoes. The plaza and Arts Park mix pavement and grass, and by 2 p.m. you will have walked farther than you meant to.
- Bring cash for market vendors. Some take cards, some don't, and the ATM run kills momentum.
- Leashed dogs are welcome at the festival, but pick your window. Aerial acts and crowds are a lot for a nervous dog at noon.
- The market accepts WIC and SNAP, which is the sort of thing worth knowing whether it applies to your household or a neighbor's.
- Costumes get you into the festival's costume contest. Not required, but the kids who dressed up will not stop talking about it.
